The holidays are a time when families unite and thanks is given for life’s many blessings. It’s also a time to remember those who are no longer around to celebrate the holidays with us and give back to those having a difficult time. In Onslow County we’re surrounded by families who’ll be reunited in time for Christmas, while others may be miles from loved ones or remembering those who have given their life and will forever be missed at Christmastime. Whatever your circumstances may be, there’s plenty of opportunity to give back and celebrate those we miss and love this holiday season.
On December 12th, military families, retired and active duty servicemen and women, and community members will come together to honor those who sacrificed for this country and are no longer with us when Wreaths Across America participants place Christmas wreaths on the graves of service members. A moving ceremony will pay tribute to the brave men and women laid to rest at Coastal Carolina National Cemetery before hundreds of wreaths will be distributed, adorning the gravesites and letting everyone know the selfless service of these veterans is never more recognized than during the Christmas season.
The brave men and women of our armed forces are always standing by ready for action, which also means on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our local USO Jacksonville NC Center, the oldest operating USO, offers a number of programs to assist in making sure these hardworking Marines and Sailors feel appreciated. For instance, the Cookie Drop is a great opportunity for local businesses and volunteers to bake or buy cookies that are then delivered to the Marines and sailors standing duty aboard Camp Lejeune, Camp Johnson, Camp Geiger, New River Air Station, MARSOC on Stone Bay and Camp Devil Dog on December 21st. If you’re interested in baking cookies for these deserving men and women, contact the USO today.
In addition to supporting those standing duty, the USO Jacksonville Center is also supporting those families and Marines far from home this Christmas with a traditional Christmas meal. This Christmas dinner is for active duty service members, dependents, and retirees and is prepared and served by retired service members and volunteers. Contact our local USO to learn more about this delicious dinner. The best part, aside from camaraderie, is that you don’t have to do dishes afterwards!
Whether you’d like to volunteer to help serve military families in need, honor those who have given their all for this country, or you are one of the military families looking for support and camaraderie this Christmas, there are plenty of opportunities in Onslow County to wish others Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
